Yoruba-Style Twin Figures, Carved Wooden Pair

This pair of carved wooden figures reflects the Yoruba ère ìbejì tradition of southwestern Nigeria. Ibeji means “born two.” In Yoruba tradition, when one twin died, a carved figure could be made to represent the child and cared for by the family as a continuing presence.

The figures have tall patterned crests, incised facial markings, carved bases, and fiber accents. They have been in our collection since the 1980s and are sold together as a pair.

Approximate dimensions

  • Male figure: 13 in. high × 3.5 in. wide × 5.5 in. deep
  • Female figure: 11.5 in. high × 3 in. wide × 3 in. deep

Condition

Both figures show visible wear from age and handling, including dings, scuffs, and surface marks. The fiber accents are loose and frayed in places. Please review the photos for details.

The specific maker and original place of carving have not been documented. Offered as Yoruba-style figures.
