In K’iche’ Maya tradition, the owl can appear as a messenger and omen, a creature associated with what is seen, unseen, and still to come. This hand-carved Tecolote mask carries that slightly unsettling symbolism into a vivid piece of Guatemalan folk art, where watchfulness can mean more than decoration.

Attributed to the artisan traditions of Chichicastenango, El Quiché, the solid-wood mask is painted in terracotta red, forest green, and indigo, with a prominent yellow beak, deep-set eyes, stars, and stippled details. Minor abrasions and paint wear are consistent with its vintage character.
